Surnames that appear in the Hursts of Shenandoah

PREFACE

Many years ago B. F. Hurst, of Corydon, Indiana, would pay an annual visit to the home of my father, William L. Hurst, at Campton, Kentucky. He would usually stay about two weeks. Much of this time was spent in discussing the Hurst family history and in trying to connect the two branches of their families. At that time I was not interested and made no effort to gather any of the facts relating to the matter. Many years later and after they had both passed on, I began to examine the data which had been preserved by my father and found it to be very interesting. It however, was mostly tradition and contained very little facts and figures borne out by legal records. It was then that I decided to look into the matter.

I attended a number of family reunions and met Hursts from different parts of the country. I also corresponded with many others, thereby acquiring a general idea of the distribution of the family throughout the nation I then began a systematic search of official records in the different sections where they had lived. This included deeds, marriage records, vital statistics, tombstones, etc. I also obtained a thorough checking of the Census records at Washington. After spending many years in this research I discovered that I had accumulated such a vast amount of information that it would require volumes to contain all of it. I then decided that the most important parts of it should be preserved. I have therefore eliminated much of it, retaining only the main essential data and have compiled that in a in a manner that, I trust, may, by careful study, be understood. However, I feel sure that many minor mistakes will be discovered as it would be impossible to get everything accurate after having received such a vast amount of information from so many different sources. The information contained herein however will, no doubt, enable many of the descendants of “Mill Creek” John Hurst to gain admittance to the D. A. R.

I wish to express my gratitude to Harry W. Farmer, Supt. of the Veterans Hospital at Lexington, Kentucky, for his assistance in acquiring data herein. He is related to the Hursts.

Respectfully,

J. C. HURST
